Review of the first Bergbeizenfliegen
On 7 October 2023, the first Bergbeizenfliegen took place in beautiful weather. On foot and with a paraglider, as many mountain restaurants around the Schwyz basin as possible were visited in one day. In the "Fun" category, the participants were also allowed to use public transport.
A total of 49 athletes took part in the competition. The competition was deliberately designed to be attractive for both competition newcomers and experienced athletes. The field of participants was correspondingly diverse.
In the sport category, different routes emerged right at the start. While one group set off in the direction of Mythen to the Holzegg turnpoint, the other group set its sights on the Fronalpstock. In the end, this led to a neck-and-neck race that culminated in three people finishing within a minute of each other. In the end, Reto Reiser and Marc Erb jointly accepted the trophy for the sports category (an engraved pepper mill). Their strategy of relying on lightweight equipment and muscle power paid off, finishing one minute ahead of third-placed Christoph Fässler. All three athletes visited eight mountain restaurants. The two winners had to cover around 36 kilometres and 3600 metres in altitude on foot. The third-placed athlete started with heavier equipment, chose a completely different route and was able to cover more distance in the air. Mirjam Barrueto was the best woman in seventh place. She also achieved a top physical performance. Second and third place in the women's competition went to Sandra Schraufstetter and Magdalena Cichucka in the sport category.
In the fun category not only public transport but also other non-motorised means of transport were permitted. And with a meticulously planned strategy, Valentin Raemy actually managed to visit nine mountain restaurants on his mountain bike. The trophy in the form of an engraved salt mill is now in his home. Urs and Robin Nadler also pursued a very good strategy. They reached eight restaurants with the Biplace glider and finished in second place. With seven stains and a fast finish time, Lukas Reichlin took third place. Maelle Frei won the women's competition with another seven turn points and came sixth overall. Marina Blättler and Véronique Graber came second and third in the women's competition.
The biggest success was that all participants reached the finish line without an accident. Some acted in an exemplary manner and went back down by train or on foot when the wind became too strong for them.
We would like to thank all participants once again. A big word of thanks also goes to those who helped with the organisation and implementation, as well as to all those who supported us in the background. Of course, this event would not have been possible without the help of the mountain restaurants and sponsors. They also deserve a big shout-out.
As we received consistently positive feedback from the participants and have fond memories of the smiling faces, we are motivated to organise the Bergbeizenfliegen again next year.
